When adding a domain to your Cookie Control licence, it is important to provide the domain in the correct format. Cookie Control validates domain names against a set of rules based on RFC 1035 and RFC 1123 to ensure that only well-formed, publicly addressable domains are registered.
A domain name is composed of one or more labels separated by dots. For example, in the domain blog.example.com, the labels are blog, example, and com. Each label represents a level in the domain hierarchy, with the rightmost label being the top-level domain (TLD).
Cookie Control accepts domains that conform to the following rules:
| Allowed characters | Each label may only contain lowercase letters (a–z), digits (0–9), and hyphens (-). Uppercase letters, underscores, spaces, and asterisks are not permitted. |
| Top-level domain (TLD) | The TLD (the rightmost label) must contain only letters and be at least two characters long. Numeric characters in the TLD are not permitted — for example, .cc22 is not valid. |
| Sub-domains | Sub-domains are accepted. You may register a domain such as staging.example.com or app.internal.example.co.uk where each label follows the same character rules. |
| No protocol or port | Do not include the protocol (http:// or https://) or a port number (e.g. :3000). Only the bare domain name is required. |
| No trailing slash | Do not include a trailing slash or any path component. The domain should end with the TLD label. |
| Length | The full domain must be between 2 and 50 characters in total. |
The following are examples of correctly formatted domain names:
| Domain | Notes |
|---|---|
example.org | Domain with a three-character TLD. |
example.co.uk | Domain with a country-code TLD and second-level registrar label. |
staging.example.com | Sub-domain pointing to a staging environment. |
my-app.example.com | Hyphens within a label are permitted. |
The following are examples of domain names that will be rejected and the reason why:
| Domain | Reason |
|---|---|
https://example.com | Protocol prefix is not permitted. |
example.com:3000 | Port numbers are not permitted. |
Example.com | Uppercase letters are not permitted. |
example.cc22 | The TLD must contain only letters — numeric characters are not allowed. |
my_app.com | Underscores are not permitted in domain labels. |
*.example.com | Wildcard characters are not permitted. |
example.com/path | Path components and trailing slashes are not permitted. |
